Pierre Gasly started from P5 of the grid, finishing P4, and gained valuable points for the team. Yuki Tsunoda had a strong practice and qualifying session, even got into the top 3 of the second qualifying session, but luck was unfortunately not on his side this race day.
Pierre Gasly, P4!
Just as the collision between Daniel Ricciardo and Valtteri Bottas happened, Gasly managed to escape the chaos to challenge Sergio Perez for P3. The Frenchman defended well from the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc behind, keeping the Monegasque behind him for some time.
At the end of the race, Pierre successfully kept the P4 with some points in his pocket, which also added points to the drivers and team championship, helping AlphaTauri to tie with Alpine at 106 points.
Unlucky Yuki
At the first lap of turn one, the Alpine driver Esteban Ocon got sandwiched by the Haas of Mick Schumacher and the Alpha Tauri of Yuki Tsunoda. As a result, Ocon collided with Schumacher and Tsunoda which caused the latter to attain damage and retire from the race.
During the Q2 session, Yuki was even able to fly to P3, with a 0.227 gap to Hamilton's P2.
During Pierre's Q3 lap, Yuki was able to give Pierre a tow which benefited the Frenchman to get to P5. However, after giving the tow, he went wide to avoid Perez's flying lap.
Perez seemed to get distracted by the Japanese going wide and got himself to run off track, which also affected Max Verstappen's flying lap.
With the Honda engines going well this weekend, here I must say congratulations to Sergio Perez, who won a podium in their home race, also the first Mexican to do this. Onto the next stop, Brazil.
